Shelterbox (2009 Partner)
Provides shelter aid, globally, to people displaced by human or natural disasters. It aims to be one of the first aid agencies on the ground after a disaster has occurred. A shelterbox contains supplies to provide a family of up to 10 with a tent and lifesaving equipment while they are displaced or homeless, for up to 6 months. Each box costs approximately £430. A box is tailored to the individual disaster needs and is delivered to the disaster area directly by one of Shelterbox’s teams – using the advantage of the network of 32,000 Rotary Clubs which alert it to disaster and the local need and to fundraise amongst its members. Shelterbox has sent over 45,000 boxes to date, attending 90 disasters in 60 countries. It has helped over 600,000 people on the road to recovery. Its founder and CEO s Tom Henderson, an ex-Royal Navy search and rescue diver, who set Shelterbox up in 2000. In 2008 he won the Beacon Prize for Leadership.
